Hawk Alert

Ok, so most people that know me know I have a huge fear of birds. Yet I continue to have issues with birds including multiple birds in the basement of our last house, nests falling on the back steps, owl in the fireplace... I could keep going, but I won't. The point is, I hate birds. So Saturday night we were heading to a baseball game and I noticed a bunch of feathers in one spot in the back yard. I checked it out expecting to find a dead bird or nest or something laying there. But there were really just feathers and we didn't know what they were from. The next morning, Sam woke me up by saying, "You might want to come here. I think I know where the feathers came from." I basically wake up in sheer terror. The first words out of my mouth are, "Please tell me it's not in the house." Thank goodness, it was outside. From our bathroom window there was a direct view of a hawk, literally a hawk, sitting on our pine tree eating another bird. It was huge and disgusting and scary. Below are a few pics of the hawk. I don't think the pictures do it justice though. This thing was freaking huge.

That is crazy - perhaps you could start doing bird shows at the zoo on the weekend. They would probably pay you really well since you attract birds and all.....

my interweb research indicates this was a cooper's hawk, common to illinois. http://www.illinoisraptorcenter.org/Field%20Guide/cooper.html

i actually asked rachel if i could trap it and train it to wreak havoc on the bunnies and squirrels that live in the back yard. 'sam the falconer' has a nice ring to it.

Maybe you should raise it and teach the hawk to watch the baby. Talk about a built in babysitter. No one is going to mess with your baby if it is watched by a hawk. Think about it...
